Peter Pears: A Biography
by Christopher Headington Faber and Faber, $26.00 hardcover, 351 p.
Reviewed by George Barnum
It's part of our gay heritage that we identify and celebrate figures from history who represent important aspects of our culture and our sensibility. We've all read and heard the litanies of names of historical personages who were or are presumed gay. Biographies may at times give us news about figures (the revelations about Olivier recently, for example), or may simply reveal for us the commonplaces of the lives of the famous.
Reading Christopher Headington's biography of the great British tenor Peter Pears will not precisely titillate or shock. Pears shared both his career and his life with the composer Benjamin Britten, a fact well known if not fully acknowledged during Britten's lifetime, but fully discussed by Pears in the years between Britten's death in 1976 and his own in 1986. The picture that one forms is compelling, a completely devoted love affair and professional partnership spanning more than forty years, but it will not shock.
At moments in the midst of this completely sympathetic portrait there is a slight feeling of having stumbled into a novel of the English middle class: flats in London, houses in Suffolk, the BBC, the travels on the Continent. Likewise the utter devotion and homey tone of the letters that begin, "My own darling honey bunch," "My
dearest darling." The impact of their story reaches us when we realize that these two rather ordinary people were not only an extraordinarily public couple, collaborating in nearly every aspect of their performing and public lives: recitalizing as soloist and accompanist, as co-directors of the music festival they founded together at Aldeburgh, on and on, but were truly remarkable musical collaborators as well.
Pears' voice retained a unique quality throughout most of his life, a quality which Britten's music generously and uniquely showcased. It is arguable that Britten's music for Pears is as great as it is not only because of his regard for the "instrument" but because of the depth of his feeling for the man who gave voice to so much of his output. Headington's biography captures the closeness of the relationship and manages as well to give a portrait of a highly intelligent, extremely cultured, and greatly talented gay man.
